Marriages, baptism and other general queries

As many of you will be aware, with Elaine moving onto pastures anew, during the vacancy the church wardens and the verger will hold surgeries for people wishing to get married,have their children baptised or have other queries you may wish to discuss. These will then be passed on to the ministry team.

These will be at St Cross following the Sunday service 11.45-12.30

Children's Adventure Farm Trust

This afternoon, Thursday 26th, we welcome a representative from CAFT, the Children's Adventure Farm Trust, to the annual Mothers' Union Social Concern Service at St Matthew's Church. The service starts at 2pm. This will give a great opportunity to hear more about this fabulous charity which we supported at last year's Christmas Tree festival. Please consider coming along. You do not have to be a member of Mothers' Union and absolutely everyone, men, women and children welcome.

You are warmly invited to a special service at Chester Cathedral for a service which includes Pat Terry becoming Pastoral Worker Emeritus. The service is on Saturday 28th September and starts at 6.30pm. If you would like to come then please feel free to email petera.hall@care4free.net.

Stretton Walking Day

Stretton Walking Day – Saturday 20th July from 11am

St Matthew’s Church will be full to brimming for the 11am Church Service during which the new Rose Queen, Olivia Rudd and her Retinue: Olivia Foreman and Grace Wakefield (Attendants), Lucy Staples (Crown Bearer) and Matthew Craddock and Lewis Hookins (Page Boys) proudly step into their allotted roles. After the service, at 12pm the congregation will be joined by the Warrington Phoenix Drum and Trumpet Corps for the ‘Walk of Witness’ around the local area.

Angie Stewart, Chair of St Matthews School PTA comments:
“Walking Day is a significant event in the St Matthews Primary School calendar. It’s heartening to see this fabulous event pull together so many people, young and old from our local community including children from Sunday School, Brownies, Beavers, Scouts and Guides. This year, we are pleased to welcome members of Park Women’s Institute to the afternoon fayre. As well as selling garden plants, they will be happy to share information with you about the meetings and events they hold each month.“

Other stalls include the traditional tombola’s, books and toys, sweet and sticky, jewellery, jams and chutneys, vintage cake stands and nutrition /fruit kebabs.

From 1pm, refreshments will be available from 3 areas:
• Tea, Coffee and Cakes will be served in the Church Hall (take-outs will be available this year)
• Hot Food will be available in the School Hall from 1pm – 2.30pm
• A Licensed Bar, BBQ, Candy Floss and Ice Cream will be available on the school playground

As well as the traditional mini fairground rides, hook a duck, balloon race, football, face painting and lucky dip activities, 2013 sees the introduction of an Assault Style Bouncy Castle, a Tin Can Alley Shoot Out and Bracelet Making.

We have 2 local dance schools and our own Gymnastics Club joining us to provide displays and get your dancing shoes on for our very own group Zumba session – yes, we are hoping for plenty of audience participation!

We would like to thank all of the local businesses who have stepped up to support the event in 2013. Without their generous contribution we would not be able to put on such an attractive family event with wonderful Raffle Prizes worth over £1,000 in the Grand Prize Draw. Tickets can be purchased from PTA members, parents, the School Office and St Matthew’s Church for £1 each from the 12th June.

Bawming of the Thorn
The event celebrates its 40th anniversary on Saturday 15 June with a Spitfire fly-past and a revival-style fancy dress parade, themed ‘flight’, which anyone can enter. The committee are trying to contact anyone who was one of these original ‘Bawmers’, so they can be VIP guests and judges.

Electoral Roll
Many people still have not applied to be on the electoral roll after its revision. Forms are at the back of both churches. Return them to the Vicarage or churchwardens please.

Spring Fayre

We would really like as many of you as possible to come to St Cross' Spring Fayre this Saturday (20th) and pass the invitation onto neighbours, friends and family. It starts at 2pm at Appleton Thorn Village Hall and there are lots of lovely stalls including tombola, raffle and refreshments and stalls for books, craft and toys.

You will be ensured of a warm welcome. Pop in, even if you've only got a short time to spare. We'd love to see you.

St Matthews Mothers Union - Weddings

Stretton Mothers' Union has had exciting events to celebrate in the last few months when two of their members were married at St Matthew's. Wendy Duckworth married Ian Buckley in October and Nicola Hall and Simon Pennicott-Hall were married in December. Nicola's Mum, Elaine officiated at both weddings and a wonderful time was had by all.

Car Boot Sale - Christian Aid

There will Indoor Car Boot Sale on 23rd March from 10am until 2pm at Dudlows Green Parish Hall, Appleton.

The event is being organised to support Matt Jessop raise funds for Christian Aid. Spaces will be available at £10, a table will £2.50 and if you bring a hanging rail they will cost 2.50 also. Saints and Scousers

You are invited to Stockton Heath Methodist Church on Sunday 24th March at 6.30pm for "Saints and Scousers" written by Angela Huntley and performed by her and various members of SHMC Dramatic society.

It tells about the lives of 5 Liverpool women and 4 saints who helped to transform lives. Refreshments will be served-donations to Active Hope and SHMC.

Don Houghton Funeral

Dear All,
Some of you may have already heard that Don Houghton died earlier this week. His funeral is to take place on Monday 25th February at 3pm at St Matthew's Church followed by committal at Walton Lea. Please be mindful of parking arrangements (School finishes at 3pm) but you are welcome to leave your car at the Park Royal Hotel where refreshments will be held later. You may wish to arrive between 2.25 at 3.50 so we can ensure that everyone is seated prior to the service starting. I would be grateful if you have any particular memories of Don which I could endeavour to include in my address. Please send them to me by this Sunday (17th) if you can. petera.hall@care4free.net

Important Information

In most years the Electoral Roll for each parish must be revised and a report on the changes submitted to the APCM. However, once every six years it is necessary to prepare a completely new Electoral Roll. This was last done in 2007, so a new Electoral Roll must be prepared this year.

Forms are available at the back of the Church to complete, in order to be included on the Electoral Roll. It would be useful to have a phone number and email address if possible. During February Sew and Sew will have gifts of hearts and flowers for sale at the back of St Cross church. Please feel free to browse . All donations go to St Cross .

The Annual Harvest Supper 2012 and Halle Concert

This will be held on Thursday 18th October in St. Matthew’s Church Hall, Stretton Road at 7.00pm for 7.30pm. Please see the Church notices and the October Parish Magazine for further details.

The first of the 300 Club Draws this year will take place, the proceeds of which are equally divided between prizes for the members and the maintenance of the Church Hall.

All proceeds from the Harvest Supper itself are for St. Matthew’s Church.

We hope you will come and enjoy the evening.

Combined United Family Communion - St. Cross Sunday

A quick note to everyone this week, as St Matthew's will not be open for Sunday morning Service at 10.30am due to the combined United Family Communion at St Cross.

Public Meeting - Appleton Thorn Play Area


A public meeting will take place at Appleton Thorn Primary School on Thursday 29th March 2012 commencing at 7pm.  All interested parties and members of the public are invited to attend.
 
The purpose of the meeting is

  • update all residents on issues relating to the proposed play area;

  • approve and adopt the Constitution;

  • elect Officers to the Management Committee;

  • decide on the next steps to progress the project.
